Recent immigrants in the Baltic States

In 2008-2009 the Legal Information Centre for Human Rights has being realising the project “Addressing the problems of ‘new immigrants’ in Estonia and in the Baltic States”. The project is supported by the Network of European Foundations for Innovative Cooperation within the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM). EPIM is initiated by a group of foundations from different European countries with the aim to strengthen the role played by NGOs active on migration and integration issues in advocating for a European agenda that benefits both migrants and host communities. More information on EPIM can be found at: www.epim.info.

The LICHR project seeks to improve significantly the observation of fundamental rights of recent or new immigrants (including right of non-discrimination) in all three Baltic States and to guarantee their better integration in host societies. LICHR partners in this project are the Centre of Ethnic Studies of the Institute for Social Research (Lithuania) and the association Afrolat (Latvia).

On 8-9 July 2009 the LICHR organised the international conference “Challenge or Resource? Recent Immigrants in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania”. The conference was to convene experts, researches, public officials and representatives of recent immigrant communities from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The participants could discuss recently drafted shadow reports and share data on recent immigrants in all three Baltic States as well as the ways to improve their legal status and their prospects for successful integration. International experts made presentations on the EU integration policies, the issues concerning the situation of non-recent ethnic and national minorities in the Baltics and in the Western countries.
